The key to unlocking time for creativity

Why did we stop using crayons? I watch my toddler have so much joy for coloring and I wonder why don’t we all have a box of crayons around. At what age did we decide we were too old for crayons? Did our parents just take our crayons and toss them out in the trash when we reached a certain age? Or was it us who deemed them no longer cool?

When looking for time to be creative it’s important not to pressure yourself to be the next Picasso and to remind yourself that not everything you create has to be a masterpiece or worth hanging in a gallery. That takes the fun out of why you started. You may have started because it was fun and making things as a career is even more fun! Yet no one told you how much work it would be and that sometimes the outward or even inward pressure to be constantly producing new art can get overhelming. But in order to be at our creative best we can’t forget the fun aspect and that to play is important.

That is why the solution that I am proposing is simple. Buy a box of crayons and keep it near you and carry it with you when traveling. You can even join in with your kids and draw and color with them. Who knows, it may end up being your next pattern design or artwork. Even if you aren’t an artist coloring can help you to relieve stress and form connections to new creative ideas. I also think coloring should be allowed in meetings to foster creative thinking.

A few years back I created mermaid art using crayons and exhibited them in a local art show. They are still some of my favorite art creations. You just never know where your crayon art will take you!

So…your assignment this week is to buy a new pack of crayons and to keep them near you. Why not also buy a new pack for someone else who needs more creativity in their life too. When you have a short break, try to draw or color with them. Join in with your kids when they color and share your materpieces with me @pattern_babe.
